Software localization

Your software is ready – we make it impossible to ignore.

What does software localization mean?

Software localization is the exact adaptation of a software to a given language and culture. This means not only the translation of the texts but also adapting the software’s whole environment and usability to the expectations and customs of the target audience.

A major difference:

Software translation = only the translation of the texts.
Software localization = a complex process that includes the whole cultural and functional adaptation as well.

The main elements of software localization:

Translation of the UI

Accurate and comprehensible translation of buttons, menus, dialogs, and error messages.

Adaptation of date, number, and currency formats

For example: 05/26/2025 or 26/05/2025 instead of 2025.05.26., depending on the country of use.

Considering cultural backgrounds

E.g., colors, icons, pictures, measurement units or legal wording.

Support of languages that write from right to left

The direction of the page might need to be reworked in Arabic, Hebrew etc.

Technical testing

Checking whether the localized versions work without error: e.g., do button texts fit in the box, does every function work properly.

An example for software localization

Complex software localization into 10 languages in JSON format, all inclusive.

We implemented a large scale localization project of a smartphone application, during which we translated into ten languages the text files of an application specifically designed for mobile devices.

One specialty of the project was that the content was provided in .json format, therefore the translation needed to be handled with precision not only linguistically but also technologically. The aim was to create perfect content in the target language by keeping the original file structure.

During the project:

  • We managed special files (.json) with CAT tools

  • We sent back the target version in a proper structure

  • The client re-imported the files to their system, and we checked the text and visual design in the app

  • We paid attention to the character limits, we abbreviated and adjusted text if needed, for example if UI-elements were too long to appear properly

We planned the entire process from beginning to end together. During the first stage of our cooperation, we conducted an export-import test:

  • The client exported the JSON files

  • We imported the files into our CAT tool

  • We translated a small sample

  • The client re-imported the file and checked if everything appears properly on their surface

This test step guaranteed that the entire process would go smoothly, without errors, and with technological compatibility, thanks to the prior design and accurate execution.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does software localization cost? Do you have a base price?

Pricing depends on multiple factors: language pair, text quantity, whether testing or other additional services are requested. We are ready to give you a custom quote.

Do you have experience in IT text localization?

Yes, we have more than 10 years of experience in translation in IT and technology. We regularly cooperate with developers and UX-designers.

How do you provide coherent terminology with bigger projects?

We use modern CAT tools (e.g., Trados, memoQ). We create an individual term base and translation memory for each customer, so we can guarantee consistent handling of texts in the long term as well.

What file formats are you able to work with?

We can practically work with any common file formats: .xml, .json, .po, .resx, .xliff, .yml, .csv, .properties, etc. We can also provide developer support if needed.

Can you provide UI/UX testing as well?

Yes, upon request, we will execute a linguistic UX-check, so that the texts will fit in the surface and will not hinder the user experience.

Into which languages do you translate official translations?

We can offer you an official translation to all European languages (the 28 of the EU + Ukrainian, Russian, Balkan and Scandinavian languages), Turkish, Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Thai, Malay, Indonesian.

Can’t find your target language on our list? Send us a request for quote.

Can you localize the future updates too?

Yes, we can do the maintenance of the localized versions and follow up on later updates as well, providing quick localization. Since we save the translations of the base system in the translation memory, we only have to translate newly added content, which means lower costs and quicker turnaround for you.

How do you handle confidential documents?

We handle all projects confidentially. In case of content under development, we will sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) too. Translation is conducted in closed and secure systems.

Will I have a dedicated contact person for the course of the project?

Yes, we assign a project manager for every client. This project manager will support and help you during the course of the entire project.
